Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Winter Concert
The Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra is a talented orchestra that brings together the greater Dayton area’s most gifted young orchestra musicians, providing the opportunity to study and perform a broad range of orchestral repertoire. The DPYO is committed to inspiring an overall cultural awareness and appreciation of music in its members and audiences.
This winter concert opens with a work entitled Loco-motion, composed by Dayton Performing Arts Alliance’s former Composer-in-Residence Stella Sung. The afternoon continues with contemporary composer Steven Bryant’s “Dusk,” a simple, chorale-like work that captures the reflective calm of dusk, paradoxically illuminated by the fiery hues of sunset. The DPYO then turns to the exquisite operatic music of Georges Bizet with Suites No. 1 and No. 2 from his beloved Carmen. Finally, the concert closes with Danzón No. 2 from Arturo Márquez, one of the most influential Mexican classical composers of all time. Fitting, then, that Danzón No. 2 is one of the most popular and most performed works in the classical repertoire today.
